Douglas Adams' 6x9=42 solved

According to Douglas Adams, the answer to the ultimate question about the meaning of life, the universe and everything is simple: 42. And the ultimate question is: What is 6 multiplied by 9, which is definitely not 42 but 54. So how can six times nine equal forty-two? Before we can answer this we have to ask another question: Why is 6 afraid of 7? Because 7 ate 9! In my opinion, 6x9=42 if 789 (7 ate 9). The nine becomes an imaginary number. With the seven-nine as a complex number, the whole thing then could be expressed in this way: 6x(7+9i)=(42+54i). Its funny that the digit sum of 42 is 6, the digit sum of 54 is 9 and 42+54=96.

So far so good. Since writing is seldom a logical process, here are my best guesses for the autors personal motivations for the numbers: forty-two is the age of Chrono when the book "The Sirens of Titan" from Kurt Vonnegut ends. If you read the volume, you learn that Chrono is indeed the meaning of life, the universe and everything (to mankind). The word "Tralfamadore" means 541 in tralfamadorian also there. And six times nine is Mary-Anne, according to the old poem "A mortifying mistake".

To learn more about Deep Thought, I suggest you to read "When Harlie was one" from David Gerrold. Harlie is a computer with neuronal networks who thinks like a human but much faster and more complex. He wants to prove the existence of god. So he plans the GOD-machine, a bigger computer than himself. Not only has the first estimation of GOD the size of a planet (later it shrinks to a small town), its calculation times are also estimated to be ten thousands of years because of the long cables that transport the signals. In addition it is stated that very complex questions such as religion or the meaning of life can only be questioned right by a computer and the answer understood only by a computer aswell.

Ich denke, 6x9=42 if 789 (7 ate 9).

So weit so gut.
